Why having solid fundamentals is the key to CS:GO esports success

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is one of the esports industry’s big three titles alongside League of Legends and Dota 2. CS:GO is the epitome of the tactical first-person shooter genre since the franchise has been around for more than two decades. It has undergone several versions but with CS:GO, it looks like Valve managed to find the best version of their landmark FPS game.

During the past decade that CS:GO has been around, it has been considered one of the toughest games to play. Its professional players are well-respected around the esports industry as they have proven their skills and worth as successful players in a stacked esports scene.

Despite the popularity of the esports scene and the lofty standards set by the top players, most pros have said that the main reason behind their skills is their fundamentals in the game. Let’s look into how CS:GO pros use what they learned early on to become the superstars they are today.

A good foundation is crucial to learning

You should know how to identify players who have an awesome foundation that they lean on all the time. You can see this in how they play the game because they have good crosshair placement and they know how to throw their grenades properly.

Those are the foundational skills that you will have to learn if you are a CS:GO player. Even if you are just a regular joe in public matchmaking servers, you will have probably encountered the fundamentals that you have to learn to become a good CS:GO player.

Players who have good fundamentals

In this list, you will see names that might be familiar to you but we will be looking at how they managed to become top stars when they turned pro. Here are the top players who have showcased good fundamentals that led to them having successful careers.

  • Jonathan ‘EliGE’ Jablonowski – Primarily known as Team Liquid’s mainstay superstar, EliGE has proven that he is one of the world’s best players. He has done this by not doing anything out of the box as he has always stayed with the fundamental way to play the game.
  • Nikola ‘NiKo’ Kovač – As one of the game’s best-ever players, NiKo has always been considered elite. He is known for his big-time performances but when you watch his matches, you can see that he is a methodical player.
  • Robin ‘ropz’ Kool – With a Valve Major under his belt, ropz has cemented his spot as one of the best players in the world. He has done this without any flashy signature moves because ropz always lives up to his name as he is cool under pressure.

These are just some of the pro players who can be considered fundamental stars. They have created a path for them in their careers moving forward. This is why new CS:GO pros still feel like they’re familiar stars because they have these three players to look up to.

Utility and aim

If players want to learn about fundamentals, the first two strengths that they have to refine are their utility and aim. When utility is mentioned, some players might be confused but this is about the grenades that they have to throw to help their teams. The flashbang grenade is the most basic utility that you can use as you can throw a flash into a site to displace your opponents and help your team have an easier time opening the bomb site.

Lastly, the aim is probably the most important part of CS:GO. Players will have to shoot their opponents properly because if they don’t, they will struggle. Aim maps are available on CS:GO which will help players become precise aimers and it will also test their reaction time.

Teams work well when players know the fundamentals

When any player knows how to work properly with their team using the fundamental skills, you can expect that they will succeed better. This is important to know because from what you see in esports teams, they are much better than the rest of the world at the game.

Communication is key

In most esports, everyone knows that communication is important. Proper callouts and the right timing with communication are crucial to pro players.

Players have to be precise with the info that they’re giving out because CS:GO requires that kind of gameplay. Pros demand a certain standard when it comes to playing the game and communicating clearly and concisely is part of the process toward success.

Regular players look up to pros who have good fundamentals

With the players that we named before, you can expect that those stars are seen as the best examples for regular players. NiKo is regarded as a legend by most of the CS:GO community because his playstyle is what regular players aspire to reach. That kind of level is built on a good foundation because he has good fundamentals.

In the past, these stars were once normal players as well. They looked up to the star during their time as well which has led to success for them when they pursued CS:GO as a career. Now, they have become the new icons for regular players which spins the wheel all over again.

Normal players want to keep up and learn

This is important to know for regular players because they want to replicate what the stars are doing. Thankfully, CS:GO has a replay system which means that the players at home can take notes about how they can play better.

Successful CS:GO teams that have good fundamentals

In CS:GO’s history, some teams have stood out due to their success. However, different playstyles have thrived through the years because some have focused on being uber-talented like the Major-winning squads of Natus Vincere and FaZe Clan. They are much more reliant on skills rather than the fundamentals.

Now, we will look at some teams that thrived because of their fundamental skills. Here are some examples that you can choose if you are looking for the best examples of CS:GO teams to watch and study.

Ninjas in Pyjamas

Back in the early 2010s during CS:GO’s first few years, NiP was the dominant team. They managed to win multiple titles including an undefeated streak of 83 straight map wins on LAN events. That was mainly built on a good foundation because most of their players were talented but they always had good fundamentals.

Fnatic

While they are still a well-known team now, you can see that Fnatic had some awesome fundamentals during their successful periods. This can be seen mainly from Freddy ‘KRIMZ’ Johansson.

KRIMZ always used his fundamentals as he took charge of Fnatic. He is one of the biggest reasons why they were such a successful team because he was both consistent and explosive despite his lack of flashy skills.

SK Gaming

As two-time Major winners, the Brazilian squad known as SK Gaming or Luminosity Gaming was filled with fundamental-focused players. The likes of Gabriel ‘FalleN’ Toledo, Fernando ‘fer’ Alvarenga, and Marcelo ‘coldzera’ David were superstars in their own right but they never forgot their fundamentals. They were standouts in the esports betting markets but they weren’t the team that would truly jump off the page as Major winners since they weren’t flashy.

Fundamentals matter in the future of CS:GO esports

If players and teams want to stand out and emerge as Bitcasino esports betting favourites, they need to brush up their fundamentals. If they can lock it down, you can expect them to be successful in the long run just like what Fnatic and NiP did for the longest time in CS:GO’s esports scene.

Hopefully, younger players can also follow the fundamental approach because they can still improve with constant practice.
